An ancient mutation of the Italian variety Traminer and grown extensively in the French region of Jura, Savagnin would have to be the best ‘mistake’ ever made in the Australian wine industry. It was erroneously brought in to Australia as the famed Spanish variety, Albarino and planted in a number of vineyards, including ours. The variety loved the sub-Alpine nature of the Feathertop vineyard and we started producing our own ‘Albarino’ in 2009. Soon after, the mistake was discovered and the majority of Australian vineyards pulled out the variety, thinking it would be too difficult to sell a wine called Savagnin. Quite frankly, we didn’t care what it was called. We had already fallen in love with it and the characteristics it brought to our varietal mix and today, it continues to be one of our most popular wines. Displaying fresh, vibrant flavours of lime, orange zest, green apples and sweet spice, it’s softly textured palate finishes crisp and dry.
