The Italian variety of Sangiovese has a long and rich history both in its homeland and more recently in the vineyards of North East Victoria, thanks largely to the early Italian immigrants who settled in the area, planting Sangiovese vines next to the swathes of tobacco plantations. We held off planting the variety in the Feathertop vineyard for many years, waiting for what we believed were superior clones of the variety to become available from Italy. That wait has certainly been worth it as the complexities of our mix of clones becomes evident with each passing vintage. The cooler nature of the 2017 vintage has produced a Sangiovese more akin to Tuscany than Australia with less focus on rich, lifted fruit characters and more on subtle complexity of flavour and structure. Layer upon layer of flavours of ripe tomato, black olive, dark cherry and savoury spice lead to a medium weighted palate dominated by fine drying tannins and mouth-watering acidity. Comes into its own when matched with food.
