During these unprecedented and downright calamitous times, it’s nice when we can provide a little bit of ‘normal’. No drought, bushfires, smoke taint or worldwide pandemic will get in the way of one of our favourite occasions of the year – Riesling Release Time!!! Most of you will be aware of our at times unhealthy obsession with this most wondrous of grape varieties and we are so excited to bring you our 2019 edition, a wine that must be one of our best Rieslings yet. The flavour complexity we are seeing from the 8 different clones of the variety slowly maturing in the vineyard is incredibly exciting. Layers of flavours of fresh lime juice, citrus peel, green apple, nashi pear and hints of floral aromas abound in a fine, delicate palate structure. The vibrant natural acidity keeps everything tightly wound and leaves the palate long and lip-smackingly crisp. Yum and thankyou Riesling.
The origins of the variety of Savagnin are a little clouded but our investigation traces it’s parentage back to the ancient Traminer grape variety from an area now known as South Tyrol in northern Italy. It then made it’s way across the Alps to the French region of Jura, where the mutated variety more closely resembles the clone we now have planted in the Feathertop Vineyard. However complicated it’s history, we believe it has found its’ spiritual home in the cool, sub-Alpine areas of north east Victoria. Our long, cool ripening period allows for maximum flavour development whilst preserving the varieties’ crisp natural acidity. This is fully on show with our2019 Savagnin which is bursting with perfumed flavours of honeysuckle, spiced Nashi pear and citrus. There is a hint of savoury complexity on the textured palate, which is balanced by fine, delicate acidity which leaves the finish clean and dry.
