Our vineyard is situated in the Alpine Valleys GI, established by Kel Boynton in 1989. Kel selected this 20 hectare site in the Ovens Valley subregion near Bright for its deep, red, well-drained soils, its terraced soil profile and sub-alpine climate. Originally known as Boynton’s of Bright, the wine range was rebranded as Feathertop Wines in 2005.
Kel Boynton has spent thousands of hours investigating the best and most suitable varietal clones for the Feathertop Vineyard, many of which have only been planted in the last few years. We now have over 50 different clones across the 22 varieties in the vineyard, including 14 clones of Shiraz in one block alone!! Many have been chosen to suit our cool climate, dry grown vineyard and to add different complexities of flavour and aroma to our wines.
The majority of the 10,000 case production is sold through the Cellar Door situated on the winery’s estate on the Great Alpine Road in Porepunkah. The vineyard is planted to 22 different varieties: Prosecco, Sauvignon Blanc, Savagnin, Pinot Gris, Verdejo, Riesling, Vermentino, Fiano, Friulano, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Dornfelder, Malbec, Durif, Tempranillo, Shiraz, Montepulciano, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Sangiovese and Nebbiolo.
The philosophy of Feathertop is to capture the true potential of the soil and climate of the region, expressed as wine. This is undertaken by the marriage of dedicated hands on viticultural practices and devoted winemaking. The vineyard is dry grown, hand pruned and handpicked to produce intense fruit in pristine condition. Winemaking practices aim to maximise fruit expression and create balanced wines with a sense of place.
Our wine club known as Summit Cru forms an integral part of the business. Consisting of 4 mixed cases per year, each case comprises of 4 different wines with a number of wines made exclusively for Summit Cru.
