Durif originates from the Rhone Valley in France, another sub-Alpine region where the variety flourishes. Its’ history in Australia has seen Durif planted mainly in much warmer climates, resulting in the variety’s reputation in this country as a monstrous, high alcohol wine lacking in complexity and finesse. But like the Rhone wines, our Durifs tend to be a more restrained, elegant style and more readily matched to a wider variety of foods. It’s all relative of course and our 2015 Durif is hardly the shy, retiring type. It’s rich, juicy palate is brimming with flavours of dark berries, licorice, sweet spice and mocha, interwoven with a fine yet firm tannin structure. It’s from one of our best vintages on record and if you can bear to hold onto a few bottles, will age gracefully for many years to come.
